Program Mission

In keeping with the United States National Energy Policy, which includes supporting & promoting clean & sustainable forms of energy, the mission of the United States Merchant Marine Academy Alternative Power Program is:

To incorporate all viable alternative energy technologies into a series of interrelated electrical & mechanical systems for the purpose of performing student training & exploration, industry related component trials & testing, and graduate level research & experimentation, for the ultimate benefit of the United States maritime & transportation industries.

Specific Program Objectives

  1. Support Department of Transportation and Maritime Administration initiatives by promoting the use of alternative energy technologies in the United States maritime industry.
  2. Incorporate alternative energy technologies into the engineering curriculum.
  3. Build and maintain a laboratory which includes working examples of all viable alternative energy technologies.
  4. Develop partnerships with public, private, and educational institutions involved in the advancement of the alternative energy technologies.
  5. Pursue public & private grants, subsidies, and other funding opportunities.
  6. Develop an outreach program through the Global Maritime and Transportation School to educate companies & individuals about alternative energy technologies, and to provide the necessary industry certifications.
  7. Use effective advertising and public relations activities to attract students with an interest in supporting the advancement of alternative energy technologies.

Kings Point & the Future..

The Mission & Objectives above are copied from what we originally titled our "Business Plan".  Much has changed since November 3, 2004 when that document was signed, but its core values and message stay the same.

The fact is, the utilization of energy from alternative sources is an absolutely necessary part of our future. Through the partnerships we have thus far established, and the capital we have already acquired, Kings Point has the potential to develop a world-class Alternative Power Program; our graduates will be familiar with the alternative power industry, and we can play a pivotal role in the integration of these power systems into the marine industry.

We are eager for your feedback and help. If you wish for any other information, or would like to get involved in any way, please don't hesitate to contact us. Thank you.
